Chapter 30
Lilith was still very tired when she was called to get up for school. The activities of the previous night had left her exhausted. After her shower, she made her way to the breakfast table where two of her three foster sisters and foster brother began teasing her about the dark circles under her eyes. She blushed, inciting their teasing even more, as they suggested that she had slipped out through the window to spend the whole night partying. Mercifully, it was time to go to school, and by the time they left the house, the teasing she had endured was but a fading memory.
For Lilith, the school day couldnât go fast enough, and by the end of her fifth-period class, Shaymoâs plan began to unfold. When the bell rang to dismiss the class, Mrs. McAlister called her up to the front and asked her to remain behind for a moment.
âDid I do something wrong?â
âNo not at all, I actually have exciting news for you Lilith,â she asked, âdo you know what else I do besides teach?â
âNo, maâam, I donât.â
âWell, I am the director and coach of the cheerleading squad, and I would like you to try out for the squad after school. I have already spoken to your father, and he said it was okay.â
Lilith bit her lip knowing that Shaymo was going to pick her up this afternoon. Suddenly she heard his voice âAll is well my precious wife, this is all part of the plan.â This made her very excited because she had always wanted to be part of the cheerleading squad.
âI would love to!â she squealed. âI do need to call my father just to make sure. He taught me that if someone said to me âyour parents said it was alrightâ that I need to ask them anyway.â
The teacher clapped her hands and said, âyour parents have taught you well. Please come see me after school, and you can use my phone.â
âOk! But I am late for my next class. Would you write me a pass?â
âOf course!â
Handing Lilith the pass, she called out to her, âsee you this afternoon!â
2:47â¦. 2:50â¦. 2:51â¦. 2:56â¦3:00â¦. âBUZZZZZZZâ the final school bell rang
Classes were finally out. Lilith grabbed her belongings and headed back to her fifth-period classroom where her teacher was waiting patiently. Her foster mother Dolores knew that her husband Santiago had already given permission, so she too gave her blessing to try out and wished her luck. They headed toward the girlâs locker room. Lilith was instructed to go to the basketball gymnasium once she had changed., where everybody would be waiting for her. The two captains of the squad looked very unhappy as there were several girls trying out. The squad was a close-knit group, and anybody coming in was considered an âoutsider.â Lilith though had the presence of mind to call for her husband who entered her mind bringing her comfort.
âYou will make the squad, my love,â he said to her. âJust let your beauty flow from the inside.
